 Villages

Visit the beautiful villages that have splendid views,  Aghios Ioannis, Velies, Aghios Nikolaos, Aghia Paraskevi, Nomia, Aghios Stefanos and Foutia. All of them in a distance no more than 10-15 km. At Aghios Nikolaos in particular there are some byzantine churches, even older than the ones in Monemvasia.

Archaeological Site of Mystras

A World Heritage Monument, the complex of ruins at Mystras offers the image of a city founded in mid-13th century by Venetians and which changed hands between Byzantines, Turks and Venetians several times, and was finally deserted in the 19th century, leaving behind beautiful byzantine churches with magnificent frescoes and the Palaces of Mystras Despots. 90 km away from Monemvasia.

Kastania cave

Named second of its kind in Europe, as it comes with a variety of shapes, colors and formations, Kastania Cave lies near the similarly-named village, 50 km away from Monemvasia. According to scientists, it was formed over a 3 million year period. A well-designed concrete pathway of 500 meters takes the visitor around the white and red stalactites and stalagmites.

Port of Gerakas

25 km north of Monemvasia one can find the fjord-like port of Gerakas, a well-hidden, when approached by sea, picturesque fishermen’s village.

Petrified Forest of Aghios Nikolaos

South of Neapoli, not far from Aghios Nikolaos village, by the church of Aghia Marina, on the rocky coastline one can discover the Petrified Forest which is the result of an original limestone petrification. A variety of rare local flora and fauna fossils can be found.
